The
silk wall paintings by Laura Sims, the founder and sole employee of Indigo Stone Studio, get more compliments then anything else we have in the gallery. She has brought us in a few more pieces for our gallery walk this Friday, so I was lucky to be able to chat with her about the process of creating her work.
Its difficult to describe what it is for people. For a while we described it as a silk mono-print, which doesn't really mean much to most of us. Mentioning that to Laura she said that its really a
silk wall painting, which is a much better way to describe them. Each one is a unique painting done by hand.
Even better than a traditional painting, Laura's
silk wall paintings have two layers, so when you move the pieces seem to shift. This gives each piece depth and vibrancy of color, and gives you the option of alternating sides, which are a mirror image of each other. Once she steams the silk the color is transferred into the fabric, displacing the black of the original silk. This makes them hand washable with mild soap, durable, and color fast.
Mounts come with each piece and were designed by Laura. They are made with North Carolina hardwoods and match the size of each silk wall painting. Because the silks are so light, they are easy to mount in drywall with simple nails. Once the mounts are nailed into the wall the fabric is held in place magnetically. These pieces make a beautiful centerpiece in a room and look best with direct lighting.
