Laura Sims makes fabric wall hangings, ties, scarves, and other wearable art out of silk from her studio in Bakersville, NC. Bakersville is about 45 minutes north of Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and she draws a lot of inspiration from this area for her work.
Laura regularly teaches classes at the area craft schools; Penland, John C. Campbell, and Arrowmont. We meet many of her former students coming through the gallery, all of them recognizing her work instantly. Her fabric wall hangings are the most talked about item we have in the showroom. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't come in and mention how much they like them or ask about the process.
Her silk ties and scarves are done with a marbling process, while the fabric wall hangings are more of a silk painting. She paints the image on a surface with a very thick coat and presses two layers of silk into the paint, which transfers the color to the silk. Each one has two layers of silk that are mirror images of each other hanging on a hardwood mount. Laura designs the mounts to fit each individual piece. Made from North Carolina hardwoods, they have an Asian inspired design.
In addition to our gallery, Laura's silk fabric wall hangings and wearable art can be seen at craft shows in the area, and some out of state. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and shows her work at both the annual shows put on by the Guild. Those are some of the largest craft events in the southeast and are one of the best ways to see some of the best craftspeople in the area all in one place.
